New GST/HST Break for Canadians: What You Need to Know
Starting December 14, 2024, until February 15, 2025, Canadians can benefit from a temporary GST/HST break on certain items. This new law, under the Tax Break for All Canadians Act (Bill C-78), means no GST/HST will be charged on qualifying goods during this period.

What qualifies for the tax break?
• Food & Beverages (specific rules apply)
• Children’s Clothing & Footwear
• Children’s Diapers
• Children’s Car Seats
• Children’s Toys (including jigsaw puzzles)
• Video Game Consoles, Controllers, and Physical Video Games
• Physical Books (printed books)
• Printed Newspapers
• Christmas Trees & Similar Decorations

How to get the break
The GST/HST break will be automatically applied at checkout for qualifying items—no need to do anything extra. If you’re incorrectly charged GST/HST on an eligible item, simply ask the retailer for a refund.
